God With Us
Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.
Isaiah 7:14
The name, Immanuel, in Matthew 1:23, means “God with us.”
But what does it mean to have God with us? For starters, it means that God understands humanity. He has experienced firsthand the limitations of being human. He’s felt the frailty of being of being newborn … the fatigue of not having a place to lay His head … the pain of betrayal by one of His closest companions … the burden of the sins of the entire world. God knows what it is like to be us … God with us … is also one of us.
But it doesn’t end there. God didn’t just get down to our level. He brings us up to His. As we cling to Jesus, His majesty lifts us from the darkness of humanity to the glory of God.
On this Christmas day, if you find dark places in your life, take hope. God knows. Christ will light the way, for He is with you.
